The sustainable building landscape has taken an evolutionary leap. With the official launch of the new version of the\u00a0LEED v5 rating system<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(April 2025), it’s crucial to understand the upcoming deadlines. The introduction of a new LEED version brings a gradual phase-out of previous versions. We know that planning is crucial, which is why it’s essential to mark these key dates:<\/p>\n

Registration for the LEED v4 and LEED v4.1 commercial rating systems (including BD+C, ID+C, and initial O+M) will close on June 30, 2026. Discover all the\u00a0deadlines<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

After this deadline, it will be mandatory to use LEED v5 for new registrations. If you register a project before the closing date, you will still have six years, until June 30, 2032, to achieve certification under v4 or v4.1.<\/p>\n

LEED v5 is not just an update, but a tool that emphasizes decarbonization for a net-zero future.<\/p>\n

The rating system is developed around three fundamental impact areas (or pillars):<\/p>\n

    Decarbonization<\/strong>: The primary goal, which addresses the significant sources of carbon emissions in buildings. This includes operational emissions (from energy use), embodied carbon (from construction), and emissions related to transportation to and from the building.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Quality of Life<\/strong>: Human-centered strategies to address crucial aspects such as human health, well-being, equity, inclusion, resilience, and community welfare.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Ecological Conservation and Restoration<\/strong>: Focuses on minimizing ecological damage, promoting biodiversity, restoring natural habitats (which support water cycles), and protecting sensitive lands.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To ensure a holistic approach, v5 also introduces mandatory assessments in several areas\u2014though without specific thresholds\u2014to encourage best practices and increase awareness. These include the Human Impact Assessment, Climate Resilience Assessment, and Carbon Assessment.<\/p>\n
